Dont use people toothpaste as it is not to be swallowed and unless you have taught your dog to rinse and spit..... and for all the people who are advocating the pet store toothpaste, you need to look up the ingredients! If I woouldn't put it in my mouth, it is not going in my dogs mouth! Too solve this dilemma, I thought of using BBQ sauce! My dog loves to have her teeth brushed and it wont hurt her, yay. And as for the tooth brush, the ones you buy at the pet store or vet are designed to fit better in your dogs mouth than a human tooth brush. Their lips tend to get in the way if your toothbrush is to big. Good luck and happy brushing :)
EDIT: I also use tweezers to scrape off the plaque that won't brush off. YOu could try this assuming your dogs teeth are not too dirty. This is the stuff that smells and it hardens onto the teeth and doesn't come off unless it is scraped by something like a bone, chew toy or you. Just make sure you don't scrape the gum and don't force your animal to stay put for you, if he can only handle one tooth at a time, then by all means do one tooth a day until he will sit and relax for you! This works great for me, I just took my 5 years olc cats to the vet and she said they had beautiful teeth. You absolutely shouldn't use a people toothbrush or people toothpaste on your puppy for the following reasons:
1. NEVER brush your dog’s teeth with human toothpaste – it can make your dog sick! Use special enzymatic toothpaste made especially for dogs. The same goes for oral rinses.

5. If you are not able to brush your dog’s teeth, there are other options. Consider using oral rinses made especially for dogs. You can also purchase special dental treats. Avoid real bones – not only can they lead to gastrointestinal upset, they may also cause tooth fractures.

Yes you can use a human toothbrush.. I use a child's toothbrush on my dog. If you use an adult brush, choose one with soft bristles.
No do not use regular human toothpaste on your dog, go to either your vet or a pet store and they will sell you a small dog tooth brush and dog tooth paste specially designed to clean your pups teeth and freshen his breath, and it is not expensive less than ten dollars. Don't know why but people toothpaste is not recommended and may be harmful or a digestive problem. My experience is the dog looks forward to beef or chicken flavored paste. You can use a regular tooth brush but a finger brush is much more effective. $7-$10 at petsmart

I would not suggest that. The pet stores have tooth paste specifically for dogs but yes, you can use a regular tooth brush.
