How to brush my kitten and what type of brush to use?

I am getting a kitten tomorrow, she is a cross between a ragdoll (mother) anda moggy (father). She has long hair which is black and white. Can you please tell me what sort of brush she needs, and how I go about doing this? How to brush my kitten and what type of brush to use?
Someone has an unaltered Ragdoll that they crossbred to a domestic? That sounds rather unlikely. Breeders tend to sell cats altered unless they're to be part of the cattery's breeding program. And crossbreeding is never allowed. I'm sure the mother cat is simply a longhaired domestic with pointed markings - not a Ragdoll.

You shouldn't be using a brush at all - you should be using a COMB. Brushes do little to remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and can pull out and break topcoat hairs. A comb will gently remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and leave the topcoat intact.

If the undercoat is light and cottony then you should only need to comb the coat about once a week. If it's thick, though, you'll have to do so every other day all year long.

Kittens reach sexual maturity as early as four months so don't wait till six months to get her fixed like some people still do. She can be fixed as early as eight weeks old as long as she weighs two pounds and is healthy.

edit: do not take the horrible advice of using a Furminator on this kitten's coat. It's not only entirely unnecessary but will DESTROY this kitten's coat. The Furminator - if used on cats at all - should only be used on those with short, thick coats. The Furminator is far more geared to the coarse hair of dogs - not silky cat hair.

edit: LOL! How ';dare'; I? I'm not ';belittling'; you I'm just stating facts. Breeders just don't sell unaltered cats and allow crossbreeding. And if this person spent all the money to buy a pedigree cat why in the hell would they even think of crossbreeding? LOL at how people get SO offended just because their cat doesn't have a ';label';. Pathetic. How to brush my kitten and what type of brush to use?
They sell a wonderful metal toothed brush in most pet shops. The head of it is about 4 inches across %26amp; is easy to clean. Actually all cat brushes %26amp; combs are quite good, but with longer fur, look for those with the slim metal bristles. As she is of RagDoll descent, be sure to brush her every day to avoid matting, which if not cared for will form a mat that can actually cause the skin to rip open. There truly is no wrong way to brush a cat. While they are not fond of being brushed ';backwards'; (tail to head) it is sometimes necessary to do so to get out the undercoat, which will be quite thick during the spring shedding. For ';fun'; brushing, there is a brush made from rubber, called the Zoom Groom made by Kong. It makes for a very relaxing experience, similar to our being massaged. I hope that you %26amp; your new fuzzy buddy have a long, happy %26amp; prosperous life together. Good luck to both of you.

%26gt;^._.^%26lt; - I love getting my brushies, almost as much as my foodies! %26lt;3
If she's a long-hair, then she is going to need brushing at least once a week, if not more. Any wire type of brush works wonders, and don't worry, their hide is much tougher than ours, so it will not hurt them.

A little more expensive is a what they call a ';fur-be'; I know I spelled it wrong, but at Wal-Mart, they something that is very similar called

';fur buster';, and it does really good.

When I got one, and to my amazement, my cats tails were their biggest places for loss of hair.

Another sign of when you are not brushing enough is when they poop, if they have strands of hair in it, then you may need to brush them more so that they don't ingest so much hair while they groom themselves...

Hope this helps,
if you go to a vet, they often sell a brush called the furminater.

its really the greatest brush ever. i also i have a long haired cat,

and i brush her usually once a week, and we notice hardly ANY shedding. they make one specially for cats, and other sizes and types for dogs, and i really cant stress, how awesome it is. it might seem a little pricey for 34 dollars, but it really is worth it. ill attach the website itself, and one of petsmart, so you can not only see the price, but you can see what a difference it makes.
